ANTOINE de SAINT-EXUPERY

The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Girl/Boy, 3rd-5th Grade, Fantasy/Adventure

First published in 1943, the year before Saint-Exupery died, this morality fable has lost none of its charm or emotional power. The Little Prince falls to earth from his planet and meets a downed pilot in the desert, where he asks him, of all things, to draw a sheep. The encounter changes the heart of the pilot - just as it will change yours. You MUST read this book!

BRIAN SELZNICK

The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick
Boy/Girl, 6th-8th Grade, Historical Adventure

When I saw this book in the bookstore, I didn't care how much it cost. I had to buy it. Told in sparse words and sumptuous pencil drawings (more than two hundred), 12-year-old orphan Hugo lives in the walls of a Paris train station at the turn of the 20th century, where he tends to the clocks and filches what he needs to survive. Hugo's deceased father, a clockmaker, worked in a museum where he discovered an automaton: a human-like figure seated at a desk, pen in hand, as if ready to deliver a message. What is the message? Who built the clockwork machine? Part history, part mystery, part adventure, part moral tale, it doesn't get much better than this!

MARGERY SHARP

The Rescuers

J.R.R. TOLKIEN

The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien
Boy/Girl, 9th-12th Grade, Fantasy/Adventure

As the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it is the best place to start if you plan on reading the entire series. The book explains the origin of the One Ring and its recovery by Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit as he travels from his comfortable hobbit-hole in the Shire in the company of Gandalf and 13 dwarves. After winning the Ring away from the creature Gollum, he uses it to overcome the dragon Smaug and is caught up on the resulting battle for control of the dragon's hoard.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy, J.R.R. Tolkien
Boy/Girl, 9th-12th Grade, Fantasy/Adventure

What else can I add to what has already been said about one of the greatest fantasy/adventure series ever written? Elves, dwarves, wizards, battles, escapes, romance, dispair and triumph, Tolkien's far-ranging epic is ultimately about the power of loyalty, love, friendship and faith and its ability to defeat man's lust for power. NOT for younger children.

MARK TWAIN

An affectionate pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. Wilbur is devastated when he learns of a pig's destiny-to be eaten. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved.

Stuart Little , E.B. White
